Yes, oh, yes. This is a strawberry. And yes, it's growing in our backyard!!!!!!!! :)
Because I'm the impatient sort, I picked it and gobbled it up!

It's so exciting to see BUNCHES of flowers in the strawberry patch. Especially after last year. Last year, we planted 6 plants and they started to take off. But to be sure they really established roots, we pinched all the flowers off last year so the plants could focus on growing good, strong roots. Well, they are now ready to ROLL!!!!!!
As you can see, I'm a *little* excited about the strawberry. :)

I guess now would be a good time to do an update on the rest of the garden.
This spring, I doubled the size of the garden. :)

With all the new room, there is now space for the zucchini.

And the decorative squash and gourds (they'll go well w/ the hardy fall mums!).

And we even planted a few rows of beans! Last year, they were pretty chaotic, but I think with fewer plants, they won't turn into a tangle.

Lastly, here's our lettuce. The seeds are so darned tiny, they all ended up in a big cluster. Ugh. Oh well, we'll see what happens.
But I still plan to work on putting them in a gutter garden, because I'm not sure what the rabbits will do....

Love love love the garden pics! I really think I've found a new hobby - and this from the person who always said she had a black thumb! What was the problem with the beans last year? This is my first year planting them so we'll see how that goes. I love the lettuce! What kind did you plant? Oh, and I found a cool tip a/b lettuce that lets you plant it longer into the summer. Supposedly you can use old window sheers on top of them to protect them from the scorching sun. This house had sheers on every window when we moved in, so I might just have to try it!
oh, and I am totally drooling over your strawberries. What's the scoop on growing them? Shade/sun? Two years until you can let them fruit? I'd be interested to know for next year.
Yeah! I so bought two containers of fresh strawberries from Aldi's today. Yummmmmmm!
Michelle, with the beans, they washed out, then we just threw them back in. We didn't know to thin them out, so it was a large tangle of beans ... we harvested a few, but it was just a big mess.
Michelle, on strawberries, I'm told you have to let them establish roots the first year, so pick off ALL the flowers. No fruit until year 2. I hear they're tricky to grow? I don't really know. But you have PLENTY of space for them .... I need to get up something to keep the darn birds away, though.
Andrea, Erik keeps mocking me for my strawberry obsession, but we eat SO many of them here!
And I can barely keep the yard mowed ...
